What is Desktop Publishing (DTP)?

DTP is the redesign of a translated document using page layout software and it is usually one of the final phases in a translation or localization project. DTP includes rearranging the text and illustrations (images or graphs) that can be made through the appropriate publishing software to create documents such as leaflets, brochures, manuals, slideshows, websites etc.

Translating or localizing does not always end with the rendering of one language to another. The translated text will often have different sentence structure and length when compared to the original. Here are some reasons why DTP is important:

  • Some languages as German can be longer so it does not fit in the initial layout, that is why it has to be modified including images and graphs.

  • Design and layout changes are often required after the translation process. Arabic for example is written right-to-left, therefore, requires entire layout modifications.

  • Asian languages also require special fonts otherwise documents will be unreadable.

  • DTP includes not only text but also image localization.

  • In-house DTP teams add an extra layer of quality assurance in the translation process.

  • DTP specialists deal with the design part so that linguists can devote their effort to accurate translation and localization.

It is very cost-effective to choose a linguistic service provider who can manage the complete project cycle for you, starting from translation, proofreading to layout design, or editing. If you rely on language and DTP experts, they will ensure consistency and quality throughout your project and the outcome will be a final printable document. That is how you save your precious time and avoid stress.
